Concepts From Bottom

When we're on the newer end of our journey, nothing seems to make sense. There's a ton going on and the equation changes frame by frame of a roll. Here are some things that I tend to keep in mind when I'm rolling from bottom.

While there are far more than just these, these to me are the most important.

Framing Is Imperative

One of the best things you can do from bottom is learning how to effectively frame both with your legs and your arms. You don't want to muscle people off you. Your frames should be low energy and incredibly effective.

Points Of Contact

As someone playing from bottom, it's imperative to establish points of contact. This can be hooks, grips, and placing your feet onto your opponent. Establishing these points of contact systematically will help prevent your opponent from stepping around or through your guard.

Kuzushi Is A Way Of Life.

Understanding body mechanics and the ability to off balance is such a skill.

Be Relaxed, But Firm.

This is a fantastic video by Kenny Florian describing how to be relaxed while on the mats. While you don't want to be a limp noodle, your ability to relax aspects of your body in order to navigate someone is an amazing skillset.

Underhooks-Underhooks-Underhooks

Another amazing video on how the underhooks work.
